About Us

Maggie Lou Quilts is a one-woman operation at this time. I construct quilt tops in my pet-free home studio in Pennsylvania and quilt each one there also. But let me tell you how it all started.

I have enjoyed sewing and crafts for many years, starting when my mom bought a Singer 301 slant-needle sewing machine for me when we moved from one town to another and I was friendless for a while. I loved sewing on that machine and made aprons, pot holders, and curtains.  Mom and I took a mother/daughter sewing class at the junior college near our home when I was in the fifth grade. There I made a red cotton skirt and became aware that I could make clothes for a fraction of the cost of purchased items, so I became a material girl, literally. For most of my sewing life I made garments for my family and me—formal gowns, jackets, skirts, slacks, shirts, purses and bags for me; and hats, pajamas, bath robes, Halloween costumes, and play clothes for the kids in our lives.

After I retired, I wanted to reconnect with sewing, which I had largely abandoned in my pursuit of a career in law.  I devoted some time to thinking about what I could make for people that they would keep because it was a special gift just for them. Quilts seemed to be the perfect item for my next career.  Although I had never made a quilt and didn’t know anyone who was a quilter, I knew that I could read and learn through books and television, and best of all, that I could zip over to Amish country in Lancaster County, which is a stone’s throw from where I live, and study Amish quilts in the stores and museums there. I bought ‘how to’ books on quilting and watched every quilting show I could find. (I owe a debt of gratitude to Alex Anderson for her wonderful show, Simply Quilts.)  I visited museums and quilt stores in our area.  After I learned the basics of quilting, I cut some fabric I already had into six-inch squares, sewed them together, made a quilt sandwich, and quilted it. I suffered no injuries in the process, and the quilt was very pretty, so I took that as a sign that I could make others.  Now I make quilts for babies who are baptized in our church and for our local hospital’s neo-natal unit. Recently I opened a store on the Etsy website and now am opening this website for quilts as well as other items that I make.

Take a moment to look around and let me know if there is something I could do to make shopping easier for you.
